Submitter: Frank Seelos - Image Dave De Morais - Caption Institution Cornell Ames Theme Pancam Long term planning Rover Spirit Sol of Observation 100 Earth Date of Obs. 04/14/04 Credit: NASA/JPL/Cornell Heading to the Hills NASA’s Mars Exploration Rover Spirit took this grey-scale panoramic camera image on sol 100, April 14, 2004. It captures Spirit’s future destination at the Columbia Hills. In this image, the hills are approximately 2.4 kilometers (1.5 miles) toward the Southeast, and it will be mid to late June on Earth before Spirit reaches the base of the hill slope. Scientists are anxious to reach this far-off location because they believe the hills may consist of different and potentially older rock units than the basalts that Spirit has observed so far. This image was acquired with the L5 filter (535 nanometers). Approved by: Frank Seelos Dave Des Morais Jim Bell Jim Bell 607-227-6402 6072555911
